Victor Ochieng
Documentary Filmmaker and Journalist | Two-Time Northern California Emmy Nominee
From Nairobi to California

I am a documentary filmmaker and journalist from Kenya, working across documentary film, public-interest journalism and visual storytelling. My work focuses on people and communities often overlooked in mainstream coverage, with stories spanning public safety, climate, education, culture and community life.

My work has taken me from Nairobi to California. I have worked with Al Jazeera English, Deutsche Welle, UNHCR and Northern California Public Media, a PBS affiliate. In 2025, I worked as a filmmaker and video editor on the Emmy Award-winning series Climate California. My work on the series later received two Northern California Emmy nominations.

I earned my Master of Journalism in Documentary from UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism and a B.A. in Journalism from United States International University-Africa. I am also the founder of Sema Radio, a community-focused audiovisual online radio platform in Kenya. My background spans broadcast news, documentary filmmaking and community media, with work produced across Kenya and the United States.

At the center of my work is a simple idea: tell stories that move the world by staying close to the people living them.
